My exploration into stoneware is inspired by the rustic Korean pottery from 14th century Joseon Dynasty called Buncheong. Traditionally less refined, Buncheong-ware had a poetic quality to its rugged construction, brushed white slip and carved surface decoration. My approach captures the historical qualities of these pots by introducing a darker stoneware clay, while interpreting the brushwork and carving in relation to my cloud theme. The history informs the way in which I translate old techniques into new cultural-hybrids.
